Kyal and Kara Blue Lagoon Build - Episode 1

07 April 2020

A few years ago, we bought this really cute little shack in the best location. We've loved this spot for years so when we finally got this location, we knew we had to do something special

There's a reason Kyal and Kara are commonly referred to as 'The Super K's'. Since appearing on The Block, the reno-power couple now have their own DIY segment on Channel 10's The Living Room, run their own successful design and construction business and have roughly 28 renovations under their tool belts. Oh, and did we mention they've also managed to bring two beautiful children, Ziya and Vada, into world amid all of this?!

Out of the countless renovations they have completed, they have filmed and documented two of these – the renovation of their Toowoon Bay family home and, more recently the renovation of a rundown beach shack in Long Jetty on the NSW Central Coast, publishing them both as 'Reno Series' on their website – as if renovating a home isn't enough work!

The couple are now ready to take on their next big project - Blue Lagoon Build – which will involve the knock down and rebuild of a little beach shack in Bateau Bay on the NSW Central Coast, that they bought with their Block winnings back in 2014.

"The day our Block winnings settled in our account was the night the shack went to auction and we took it as a sign that it was meant to be," says Kara.

"We moved into the shack shortly after we bought it. We made some quick cosmetic changes to make it liveable and moved in. We literally sprayed everything white and roughly sanded the floorboards, which was the perfect way to freshen up the little shack. We only lived there for six months while we worked on developing some plans to build there. We ended up deciding we needed to get a few more personal renos under our belt before we could really decide on designing our forever house."

"We've loved this spot for years so when we finally got this location, we knew we had to do something really special," says Kara.

"But at the time, we didn't have kids and we weren't exactly sure what we wanted to build or what we needed in a family home."

Five years on and two kids later, Kyal and Kara now have a clearer vision of what they'd like to build and exactly what they want from their forever home.

The design

"We're building an L-shaped coastal-style home, with the hub of the home focused around the outdoor alfresco, yard and pool area," says Kyal.

"The home will have four bedrooms with a master suite upstairs, a kids' rumpus room and detached guest house. The exterior will include crisp white weatherboards, limestone and a rough white render paired with timber features."

Downstairs, we've got a beautiful open-plan kitchen, living and dining area which opens out onto our garden and pool." says Kyal.

After months of gathering inspiration for Blue Lagoon Build, Kyal and Kara settle on an Australian coastal-meets-Mediterranean-villa aesthetic.

"For the exterior of the home, we really want to pack a punch, says Kara. But, when I think of classic Australian beach house, I automatically go to crisp white weatherboards."

"Inside, I instantly want to feel calm and relaxed so my colour palette will consist mainly of whites, creams and sandy tones. It's really considered choices like that throughout this home that is really going to create the ultimate beach house for us."
