Kyal and Kara Blue Lagoon Build - Episode 7

18 May 2020

Just when we think Kyal and Kara's new family home on the NSW Central Coast can't possibly get any better, they surprise us with another exciting room reveal that exceeds all expectations and ignites some serious house envy.

This week was no different. Kyal and Kara have officially completed the heart of their home, their open-plan kitchen, living and dining room and, in true Kyal-and-Kara fashion, they've pulled out all stops to create a functional and beautiful space that truly takes your breath away.

A Philippe Horama Vitreous Freestanding Firebox from Cheminee is the focal point in the living room and the Vittoria Slip Cover 4-seater sofa in Milk, from GlobeWest, provides the perfect place to soak up the ambience.

The first thing that grabs your attention is the sandstone feature wall that spans the entire length of the living room, creating a beautiful backdrop for the fireplace.

"Part of the design of this home was making sure the outside and the inside has a really beautiful flow and we have some gorgeous sandstone walls outside so, we wanted to bring that in to the lounge room with a big feature wall," says Kara.

Sketch Odd Leather bar stools in Light Oak/Caramel, from GlobeWest, invite you to take a seat at the large island bench.

Kyal and Kara's decision not to include a TV in the living room makes the space feel calm and intimate and, in turn, the fireplace has become the focal point.

"Originally, we had envisioned a TV for this room, says Kara. But, as a family we didn't need an additional TV (we already have one in the rumpus room) and it seemed a shame to have a beautiful sandstone wall, and cover it with a TV."

Instead, a beautiful artwork by Newcastle-based artist Brittany Ferns hangs on the wall next to the fireplace. "As soon as I saw her beautiful work, I knew I wanted her to create a custom piece for us," says Kara.

The Ethnicraft Bok Dining Table and Avery Maja Arm Chairs, from GlobeWest, complete the oak tones throughout.

It's no mean feat making such a large, open-plan room like this, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and a large void above the living room fitted with six skylights, feel warm and inviting, but by planning their layout, finishes and furniture carefully from the start, that's exactly what Kyal and Kara have managed to achieve.

Mud Beaded Dome pendants by Peponi Interiors, from African Trading Port, create an intimate setting over the dining space and help to 'ground' the table.

"Because this is such an open-plan space, we've really worked hard to make sure that it doesn't feel too cavernous; we really want to zone each space really well," says Kara.

"It's an open-plan living room, but we have three distinct zones that tie together beautifully with that sandy colour palette and all those gorgeous textures."

With its enormous island bench made from Cosentino's 'Taga' Dekton; a material made of porcelain, glass and quartz. The stone sits on custom-made oak legs, which gives the island bench a bespoke look and helps it to blend in seamlessly with its surrounds.

Custom-made oak cabinetry and shelving by Loughlin Furniture also help to create cohesion, while adding warmth and ample storage to the kitchen.

The 'Taga' Dekton stone benchtop by Cosentino is the jewel of the room.

"The kitchen is just a magnet for people. It just feels so nice to have everyone around," says Kyal.

"One of my favourite things to do is have my family and friends over and all help prep and prepare meals together," adds Kara.

With its generous island bench, fabulous freestanding ILVE cooker and a butler's pantry, neatly tucked away to the side, that hides away all the appliances and mess, this kitchen really is the ultimate entertainer.
