• First Home Buyers: Young gun home owners, RAMS customers

RAMS customers, Jamie and Taylar, let us in on their strategies that landed them their first home.

I'm Jamie.  I'm Tyler.  We are both 23.  We've been dating for almost seven years and we just bought our first home.

It was such a big thing to make sure that we had our first home at a young age. When you're young, you don't have much overheads.  You just get it done.

Saving is definitely the most important part because that deposit is definitely the hardest thing when it comes to getting your finance.  But also locking that account was probably the biggest thing that helped us.  We couldn't touch the money.

For us, it was definitely time.  It was just the right property came at the right time.  We didn't want to go beyond ourselves, especially first home.

The more properties you see, the more you narrow down exactly what you want.  You see what you want and what you don't want.  You should never just jump in and purchase a property.

I think the biggest mistake we went to is we just didn't do our research in regards to the broker we were going to use initially. I think that's where it all got a bit hard for us.  That was our give up moment.  And then that's when I met Sarah from RAMS, and we just felt like they were purchasing the property with us.  It wasn't just us purchasing a property, it was a team effort that was going into it.

I didn't actually realise how much paperwork was involved.  Signing your life away about ten times.  We are very thankful to RAMS because they can give you advice on just everything.  Any question that you had.  And you're not just calling a random number, you've got a mobile phone and they're available on the phone at any time.  That was a big help.

It was an amazing experience actually picking up those keys and then unlocking the front door which Taylor struggled for about ten minutes to unlock it first.

We got some takeaway and just had our camp chairs and had our first dinner.

The dream and the reality I think is pretty much the same, but we do feel like we're living in a dream at the moment.  Only because it just feels so surreal that we could actually achieve this at 23.

Just work hard, save hard and you'll achieve your goal eventually.

Raymond A Ram is the RAMbassador for RAMS Financial Group. Raymond works with the RAMS team to bring simple, helpful and expert information on home loans and savings accounts to life with his down to earth and cheeky personality. He enjoys seeing everyday Australians turn their dreams of saving for a goal or getting into a home a reality.

Growing up in Goulburn, NSW, Raymond was brought up with good old-fashioned Aussie values of hard work and a fair go. It soon became apparent that Raymond wasn't content for the conventional path of grazing, producing the very best wool, and finding a nice sheep to settle down with. So it wasn't long before his passion for performing and his talent as a likeable larrikin shone through - landing him a few roles such as 'RAMlet'. He was even tipped to play RAM-bo at one point but chose to become star of the small screen instead as RAMbassador for RAMS. He now finds this role so much more rewarding.
