Kyal and Kara Blue Lagoon Build - Episode 4

28 April 2020

In this episode of Blue Lagoon Build, Kyal and Kara are eager to create their own sanctuary. With a bedroom, ensuite and walk-in-robe to consider, the team work their magic to produce an enviable master bedroom.

If you had the chance to build your dream home from scratch, we could guarantee that a spacious and private master bedroom with a generous (and beautiful) walk-in wardrobe and luxurious ensuite would be on your wishlist.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary; a place to escape from the world (and your kids), and that's exactly what Kyal and Kara have created in their new Mediterranean-meets-coastal home on the NSW Central Coast.

Situated on the second floor, their master suite enjoys verdant views of the tree tops and glimpses of the ocean thanks to an abundance of windows and skylights.

Kyal built the four-poster bed from hardwood salvaged from the original beach shack that was on site.

"Our vision for the master bedroom was that we'd be able to be lying in bed or standing in the shower and pretty much, wherever you are in that room, you can look out a window and just see trees," says Kara.

"So, it almost feels like you're in a bit of a treehouse," she adds.

Vintage steel wall lights, designed in the early 1900s, add a sense of nostalgia to the space.

From the four-poster bed to the incredible walk-in wardrobe, Kyal and Kara have created the ultimate parent's retreat.

Here, they talk us through the design and share their tips for others looking to create a bedroom oasis of their own.

What inspired the design?

Having the beautiful native trees around us definitely inspired us to ensure we had a bedroom that captured the outlook. We really wanted to ensure that the room felt calm, so, inspired by our local beaches, we've chosen a muted colour palette with lots of sandy tones. The bed was an evolving design inspired by the original beach shack.

Tell us about the bed!

We were keen to use the original shack's old hardwood frames for something within the new home. Kyal selected some large posts and gave them a good sand. They came up beautifully – hard to believe that some would call that 'scrap timber'. We gave the timber a deep stain and made into a four-poster bed. It's certainly a feature against the neutral colour palette.

The bed has been orientated toward the eastern facing wall of windows so Kyal and Kara can watch the sunrise from bed.

What are your must-haves in this space?

Storage was a big one! Plenty of hanging and drawer space for clothes. One of Kyal's 'must haves' was carpet. Wool carpet underfoot is so luxurious. We haven't had a room with carpet before and it definitely has that 'hotel feel' and is great with kids to roll around and play on. Underfloor heating was something we had in Melbourne and we were keen to have in bathrooms in this build, too.

Archways are a continuing theme throughout the home so Kyal and Kara decide to incorporate them into their walk-in wardrobe design.

Favourite thing about your parent's retreat?

My (Kara) favourite thing would have to be the natural light. With windows along the northern and eastern face, we're looking out over the trees - such a lovely outlook when you're lying in bed. Watching the sunrise in the morning has been so nice!

Kyal's favourite thing would have to be that he finally has somewhere to put his clothes! I'm sure a lot of husbands can relate to having their wives’ take up all the wardrobe space – and this was definitely the case in our last bedroom. Having the extra space is definitely a luxury we won't be taking for granted.

Tips for designing a parent's retreat

  • Write yourself a wishlist and then prioritise the list to ensure you're really thinking about what you'd really like and appreciate within the room.
  • If space is on your side, allow for an extra chill-out or reading zone.
  • Factor in storage wherever possible to ensure you have a place for everything. An uncluttered space will help to ensure your room feels like a retreat. There are some great bed options that allow for extra storage under bed.
  • Bedside lamps or wall lights are a great way to create a feature and have the added benefit of being super practical.
