• Designing for your new renovation

When it comes to building an entire new home, making the right decisions around design, style and fittings may seem daunting.

    Transcript:

Designing a new home from scratch can be a daunting experience.  Today we're at Metricon Studio M with new home stylist Kate who's going to show us where to start.

What's the best bit of advice you can give someone looking to build a new home?

The best thing you can do is be organised, so scrap booking is a great place to start to get an idea of a style that you identify with. And also visit display homes, make a note of what you're seeing, what you've seen, and what you liked.  It really makes for a great starting point with your colour consultant.  It makes it so much easier to be able to see a colour in a large application rather than choosing off a small sample.

When it comes to designing a new home, I always find that kitchens are hard area for lots of clients.

It really does dominate the process of the colour selection.  I think big areas such as kitchens and bathrooms and also the externals can be a bit of a daunting area.  So my advice is start with the biggest parts of each space so that might be the flooring or it might be the bricks on the home and don't be afraid to be bold with colour.  I think sometimes we get caught up in trying to keep everything light, that we forget that we can be practical and incorporate a bit of a contrast at the same time.

We're in the bathroom section now. I see there's a lot of selections here.  Does it take people long to choose what they're after?

Sometimes people have seen something that they like on display.  Lot of times we'll take it from scratch, so they might find a few things that we like and then it'll come down to the practicality of how it's going to suit their lifestyle and how it's going to suit the space.

If you had three good tips for someone designing their home what would they be?

Be organised is the main thing. Get out and have a look at our display homes, take a tour of the studio to get an idea of what your options are and start with the larger spaces.  But have a look at how that's going to fit into your budget.

    Fantastic.

Well I've really enjoyed today and I think anyone that's looking to build a new home should certainly visit Studio M.
